Muscle Memory at GCMS
GCMS Middle School students have consistently scored above 90% on ISAT math tests. Perhaps this is due, in part, to practicing Muscle Memory in their math program.
Nancy Knittel, 6th grade math teacher at GCMS, has successfuly developed a way to use muscle memory to help her students remember math procedures. As a procedure is learned, a poster is displayed in the classroom and a movement is practiced to help students remember the concept. Over the past several years, the 7th and 8th grade teachers have adopted and reviewed the same muscle memory techniques. All the students really enjoy doing math with Muscle Memory!
Recently, a muscle memory assembly was held, and all middle school students performed the muscle memory routines they learned in 6th grade.
