GCMS Implements Co-Teaching with Project Choices

GCMS Middle School staff is determined to meet the needs of all students.  This determination led the staff to work with Project Choices in implementing co-teaching.

Project Choices

•is funded by the Illinois State Board of Education

•has a goal of helping school districts increase opportunities for Special Needs students to attend classes in the regular education setting

•provides training and support to make the transition from working in a self-contained setting to the inclusion model

Through Project Choices GCMS Middle School staff has implemented co-teaching which has been well-received by all.

•Teachers report that student behavior has improved when inclusion is implemented.

•Special Education teachers are taking on a bigger role in teaching lessons in addition to assisting with the lessons.

•Parents comment positively about enrolling their students in co-taught classes.

•An overall increase in the number of students with IEP's who scored in the meets/exceeds categories on ISAT tests has been experienced at GCMS.
