Engaging Students a Top Priority in GCMS Middle School Culture

In 1993-94, 6th - 8th grade students from the rural, east-central Illinois Gibson City and Melvin-Sibley districts were combined to become GCMS Middle School.

At first a middle school in name only, GCMS took steps to become a true middle school:

•Established a relationship with AIMS

•Began implementing systematic changes

•Provided staff development in middle school best practices

•Taxpayers approved a referendum for a new middle school facility in 1998

•Middle school staff provided regular input in building plans

•Staff and students moved into new school in 2001

GCMS reached its goal and is now a high-performing middle school - student centered with a strong emphasis on parent and community involvement.  Consequently, GCMS Middle School was awarded Illinois Horizon School: Schools to Watch status in 2007.
